STOP PRESS! CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR WINNING CUB SCOUT COUNTY FLAG TEAM 2004!!

News of 30th success in recent District and County Competitions

30th Pack retain the Cub Scout County Flag!

Many thanks to Maurice Johnston (South-East District) who stood in for ACC, Paula Bryson, and organised an excellent competition for the Cubs at Ardnavalley Scout Centre on 8th May. Thanks also to our ADCs, John and Suzi, and Suzi’s daughter Cherry, who ran some of the bases; activities this year included tent pitching, backwoods cooking, first aid and a blindfold trail. Suzi and Cherry also braved the kitchen again with yet another indoor cookery challenge which left the Cubs covered in chocolate and the kitchen reeking of boiled egg!!! We're delighted to report that the County Flag is returning to Gilnahirk for another year- congratulations to the winning team from 30th Pack of Ryan McKnight, Andrew Kernohan, Richard Anderson, Matthew Welsh, Philip Haire and Gareth Thompson! The 30th Team will be heading to a local eatery to celebrate their win, and will be officially presented with the County Flag at the City Hall in the autumn.

Congratulations to Sixer of White Six, Michael McMillan, who cam first in the seniors' race at the District Cub Scout CrossCountry Race at Stormont Estate on 29th February

After a nail-bitting final which went first to extra time and eventually was decided on penalties, 30th Pack were victorious in this year's District 5-a-side football competition at 9th HQ, Sydenham Methodist Church Hall, on 9th March. Well done to all the lads, and to Coach, Paul Crowe, on an impressive result for 30th! Although we have made it through to the final in previous years, this is first time we have won the trophy.

Further congratulations to the 30th A team of Andrew Kernohan, James McNaney, Gareth Thompson and Rob Bennett who won this year's District Cub Scout Quiz held at 33rd HQ Stormont in February. This is the third successive year in which the Pack have won the District Quiz

A large contingent of 12 Cubs from 30th Pack helped East District to a successful defence of the Armstrong Swimming Trophy at the Belfast County Gala held on 21st February at the Robinson Centre. Well done to all of our swimmers, many of whom made it into the finals, with several winning individual medals.

30th Pack were also out in force at the annual District Cub Scout Mountain Bike Competition held at Crawfordsburn in January. Well done to all of our cyclists who completed the gruelling course; 30th Pack won 6 medals on the day:- 8 year old's race Ben McCadden (1st), Gareth Thompson (3rd); 9 year olds' race Andrew Flack (1st), Matthew Welsh (2nd); 10 year olds' race Robbie Lamont (1st) Ryan McKnight (2nd). Soecial congratulations to Andrew who went on to win the Champion of Champions Race for the second year in succession.

Belfast County Flag 2003

This year, 2 teams from 30th Pack gathered with Cubs from other Districts at Ardnavalley on 12th April to compete in the Belfast Cub Scout County Flag competition. Amongst the challenges for our teams this year were a scavenger hunt, mini pioneering, compass, and flag activity. Once again though our own ADC Suzi stole the show for sheer creativity and originality!! Having coerced the assistance of her son Barum, home briefly on leave from Uni in Dublin, Suzi ran her own version of ‘Name That Tune’ with the Cubs trying to play well known tunes on a collection of glass bottles half filled with water. Very entertaining (if not perhaps the most musical performance we’ve ever heard!!!).

The highlight of the competition was of course the lunchtime cooking event although we were concerned that Steve had enlisted some new victims to sample the food this year- surely Herbie McFarland did eventually recover last time????? Has ANYONE seen him since???. We'll let Michael, one of our own Cubs, describe the gourmet cuisine on offer as listed on the menu he created for the ‘eat@30e café’:

TODAY’S LUNCHTIME SPECIAL

Chef’s Uniquely Brilliant Soup

-a blend of seasonal vegetables simmered to perfection

Chef’s Unbeatable Beef Surprise

-beef cooked slowly over an open fire with carrots and onions, served with delicious mashed potatoes and worth the wait!

(We’ll leave it to your imagination to define ‘simmered to perfection on an open fire’ and to guess just how surprised the judges were by the beef!!!)

Congratulations to:-

1st: 30th B Team: Rory, Niall, Tom, Michael, Richard and Matthew

2nd: 30th A Team: Ryan, Philip, Ryan, Chris, Rob and Adam

We’ve promised to take both teams to Pizza Hut for a decent meal to celebrate their win,

David, CSL 30th

East District Cub Scout Quiz

10 teams representing 5 Packs (3rd, 10th, 28th, 30th and 99th) took part in the District Cub Scout Quiz held at the Bill Elliott Hall, Tamar Street on 10th February. Many thanks to Jane and Gary and the 28th Group for hosting the competition and providing refreshments, to the team of markers- Julie, Jamie and Pamela (MENSA membership application forms in the post!), who sorted the clever clogs from the dunces, and to ADC Suzi ‘I can be as scary as Anne Robinson’ Jeffries who asked the questions (loved Suzi’s Bugs Bunny impression- ‘What’s up doc?’). DC Ian was on hand too to present medals to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed teams at the end of the evening. Congratulations to the winners, Jordan Douglas, Ryan McKnight, Niall Morrow and Richard Anderson from 30th A Team who went on to represent East District at the NI Final in March, finishing in an impressive 3rd Place just behind teams from Jordanstown and Londonderry.

Belfast County Swimming Gala 2003

East District was represented at the County Gala at the Robinson Centre on 25th January by more than 20 Cub Scouts from East, including 12 from our own Pack. We faced steep competition this year from the other Districts, particularly the team from South District which included Sarah Kelly, a very fast senior swimmer who left all the boys from East in her wake. Nonetheless, East was eventually victorious on the night, retaining the Inter-District Armstrong Cup by an impressive margin. The lads from East also amassed a total of 11 individual medals, together with gold for the official District relay team and bronze for another ‘unofficial team’ made up entirely of additional Cubs from East. Well done to all the winners and our thanks to ACC Steve and his team for a well-organised and enjoyable event. 30th Pack also retained the District's own Bolton Shield and some of the Cubs gained individual medals including:- Philip Hawthorne (Gold, Senior Backstroke; Bronze, Senior Breaststroke and Senior Freestyle); Niall Morrow (Silver, Senior Backstroke); Michael McMillan (Silver, Senior Breaststroke); Matthew Cahoon (Bronze, Junior Backstroke); Richard Anderson (Bronze, Junior Breaststroke).

East District Cub Scout Mountain Biking Competition 2003

The boys were given medals as prizes and the Champion was given a trophy. Thanks go to Robert and Roy Lamont for their help and to Elizabeth for keeping the score of the winners and for registration at the start of the competition. Also to Alan Campbell our Deputy DC for handing out the prizes.

NI SLOT-CAR COMPETITION (BELFAST HEAT)

9 members of 30th Pack represented East District at the Belfast Heat of the Slot-car competition (Cub Scouts) on Saturday 7th December, racing against young Eddie Irvines and Ralph Schumachers from North and South Districts. Although Jordan and Andrew managed to battle their way into the final at the end of the morning session, victory eluded them both in the rally car section in the follow on afternoon heats and they finished overall just outside the rankings, narrowly failing to qualify for the final at Crawfordsburn and the chance to win a scaletrex set of their own. Commiserations to both and many thanks to Sinclair and to Colin, David and Joanne from the Crawfordsburn Wardens’ Team for a well organised competition.

Belfast County Flag 2002

Congratulations to our team of Chris, Patrick, Rob, Philip, Paul and Rory who represented 30th Pack at this year’s Cub Scout County Flag Competition at Ardnavalley on 11th May. The team had been training very hard for this year’s lunchtime event, backwoods cooking, and were to be found many Saturday afternoons over the last few weeks perfecting their cooking skills at Cairn Wood. The judge, Herbie McFarland, was very impressed with the smoked trout, garlic bread, orange and ginger ‘surprise’ and bangers and mash and lavished praise on our team (before he keeled over and was admitted to the local hospital with suspected food poisoning! Get well soon, Herbie and see you next year!). There was a wide and varied range of activities to test the Cubs to the limit during the day: other bases included origami, knotting, compass, tent pitching and mini-pioneering. Many thanks to ACC Steve for organising an excellent competition, and to our own East ADCs John and Suzi (and daughter Cherry) who helped run some of the bases. Well done to the team on a great effort and a thoroughly deserved 3rd place, only 4 points behind this year’s winners 109th South. Congratulations from 30th to Gwen and the lads at Finaghy on 'borrowing' the Flag from East. Lets see if we can bring the Cub County Flag back ‘home’ to 30th in 2003!

East District Cub Scout Cross-country Race

7 Cubs from 30th Pack (Paul, Philip, Ryan, Rory, Andrew, Tom and Robbie) took part in the annual crosscountry race on Saturday 9th March in the grounds of the Stormont Estate. Congratulations to Rory, the under 10's and overall winner, and to 30th Team of Rory, Tom, Robbie and Ryan who finished in 3rd place.

East District Cub Scout Quiz

Congratulations to Michael, Max, Tom and Rory, this year's winning team at the District Quiz held on Monday 11th February at 9th HQ, Sydenham Methodist.

East District Beaver Scout Uni-hoc

30th Colony entered 2 teams in the District heat of this competition. 30th A narrowly lost out in a tense semi-final play off in Division 1 while 30th B topped Division 2 but were beaten in an exciting final by 10th A Team. Congratulations to all of our Beavers on a great performance. 30th B, as runners up, progress to the Belfast County Final.

Mountain Bike Competition

10 Cubs from 30th Pack took part in the District Cub Scout Mountain Bike competition held in a (very!) muddy field within the grounds of the Stormont Estate on a wet and stormy Saturday afternoon in January. Many thanks to the organisers, Roy (GSL 3rd) and his son Robert, Elizabeth (ACSL 3rd) and Suzie (ADC Cubs). Congratulations to 30th team who picked up 4 of the 9 medals: Robbie Lamont (Gold, 8 years); Ryan McKnight (Silver, 8 years); Ryan Harbinson (Bronze, 9 years); Ross White (Bronze, 10 years).

Belfast County Swimming Gala

30th Pack fielded a strong team of 16 swimmers in the County Gala at the Robinson Centre on Saturday 12th January to help East District to their successful defence of the Armstrong Cup for the third consecutive year. Congratulations to all of the team, and especially Philip Hawthorne (Gold, Junior Backstroke; Bronze, Junior Freestyle); Niall Morrow (Silver, Junior Breaststroke); Michael McMillen (Bronze, Junior Breaststroke; Silver, Relay); Jeff Gilmore (Bronze, Senior Freestyle; Silver, Relay).

Slot-Car competition(Belfast Heat)

5 members of 30th Pack (Ryan, Ryan, Paul, Tom and Michael) represented East District along with Cubs from 99th Pack at the Belfast Heat of the Cub Scout Slot Car Championships in early December. After a number of nail-bitting heats during which many cars crashed off the track, both Ryans managed to secure places in the finals of the rally and formula one classes, finishing in 1st and 4th place, respectively. Special congratulations to Ryan Harbinson, who finished in 4th place overall at the end of the event.

County Flag Presentation

Our Winning County Flag Team of 2001 were invited together with their parents and 30th Leaders to a reception at Belfast City Hall on Wednesday 28th November for a guided tour of the City Hall before joining the Lord Mayor, Councillor Jim Rodgers, in his Parlour where team captain Chris Wilson offically received the County Flag from the Lord Mayor. We were also given a special framed medallion set as a momento of our visit. Well done again to the team who all looked very smart on the night!!

More Competition Success!

30th Pack entered the Belfast County Alexander Swimming Competition in November. We managed to muster one of our largest turnouts in recent years at this event, with footballers and rugby players alike racing straight from the pitch and into the pool. Unfortunately this still wasn’t enough to steal the trophy from perpetual winners, 1st Carryduff Pack, but we went home well pleased with second place.

Crawfordsburn Cub Scout Challenge

Congratulations to 30th Belfast team of Chris Cahoon, Conor Winning, Ryan Harbinson, Paul Gibson, Jordan Douglas and Ryan McKnight who fought off fierce competition from teams from across Belfast, Counties Down and Antrim to win the Autumn NI Cub Scout Challenge event held at Crawfordsburn on Saturday 13th October, despite managing to smash both of their eggs which would have been worth 5,000 bonus points each intact. Well done and thanks to Wardens Vic and Eric and their team for another super day at the Burn, and for coming up with yet more new challenges to stretch the Cubs to the limit. If YOUR Pack hasn’t entered before, why not get in contact with Crawfordsburn and book your place for April 2002.

Cub Scout County Flag

Congratulations to our victorious County Flag Team of Chris Wilson, James Thompson, Chris Harvey, Ross Clark, Stuart McGilton and Patrick Morrow who did us all proud at the day long competition at Ardnavalley Scout Centre on 19th May to return the County Flag to Gilnahirk for the second time in three years. Well done, lads!

NI Cub Scout Challenge, Crawfordsburn

Well done to our Team of Ross, Ross, Rory, Patrick, Jordan and Paul, who came home in 3rd place with a haul of bronze medals at the Cub Challenge held at Crawfordsburn at the end of April. They all had a super day trying out the new climbing wall, practicising their archery skills and of course managing to get plastered in mud as they made their way around the assault course. Thanks to the Warden's Team for a super competition

East Belfast District Cub Scout Crosscountry Race 2001

Congratulations to 30th Team of Patrick Thompson, Patrick Morrow, Ross Clarke and Paul Johnston who came second in this year's East District Gala on 1st December.Despite a smaller entry than usual from 30th this year due to a clash of events with Gilnahirk Primary School, we were narrowly beaten by only 1 point by this year's winners, 99th Pack. Individual results were as follows:

Silver, Senior Breaststroke Ross Clark (30th E)

Bronze, Junior Backstroke Patrick Morrow (30th E)

Slot Car Competition

The Belfast Heats of the annual Slot-Car competition were held at 78th (North) HQ on the Antrim Road on 2nd and 3rd December. 30th Pack was represented by Ross Clarke, Paul Johnston, James Thompson, Patrick Thompson, Paul Gibson, Ryan Harbinson and Christopher Harvey who faced stiff competition from Cubs representing a number of Packs from other Groups in Belfast County. Thanks to Colin and Sinclair who organised the event and congratulations Ross (30th) who eventually finished 2nd in the Belfast Heat and progresses to the NI Final at Crawfordsburn in March.

Crawfordsburn Cub Challenge

30th Pack entered a team in the second Crawfordsburn Challenge Day on Saturday 7th October. Events included archery, penalty kick competition, grass-sledging, assault course time trial, plate golf and lots of crystal maze style challenges involving snuffing out candles, hooking tin cans and crossing imaginary minefields. Our Field Officer, Sinclair Trotter, was also on hand to run a slot-car competition during the afternoon. At the start of the competition, each team was asked to look after 2 eggs, which had to go everywhere the Cubs did during the day. The Cubs received 5000 points per egg produced intact at the end. Although one of 30th team’s eggs came to an untimely and messy end during the grass sledging, the Leaders were amazed that of all people Seconder Paul managed to preserve the second egg until the very end. By the end of the day, the Cubs were ready for home, tired, covered in mud and blissfully happy. Many thanks to the wardens Eric and Vic who ran the event and congratulations to 30th Team of Peter, Paul, David, David, Luke and Jeff, the only team incidentally from Belfast County, who finished a very respectable 4th place behind the winners from Donaghadee. Vic and Eric hope to run another challenge day soon and we would definitely recommend it to other Packs in East.
