30th Belfast Squirrels (Gilnahirk)
2003 was yet another very successful year for our Squirrel Dray; we continue to have the maximum number of boys attending every Tuesday at 6.15pm to 7.15pm in the Stye Brae Centre.
The Squirrels had a sleep over (1 hour) and raised the magnificent sum of £100 which was presented to Susan Jackson to help fund her trip to Mexico where she is assisting with street children. We also had a visit to Knock Fire Station which is always a favourite outing for the boys. Hilary Blundell came along one evening and gave the boys good advice on how to look after their teeth.
Vanessa Reavey from the Hedgehog Rescue Centre brought some of her friends to show the Squirrels and they gave gifts of paper towels, tins of chicken flavoured cat/dog food, which the hedgehogs are very partial to and other items which she need to help in running the Centre.
The boys enjoy doing craftwork and we try to keep them busy with various things throughout the term. In May we went along to Streamvale Farm where we held our end of term party and needless to say this was most enjoyable for all.
We have a constant flow of Squirrels who go on to join the Beaver Colony once they have reached the age of six years. Boys aged 4 years are very welcome to join the Squirrels, but we ask parents/guardians to please speak to one of the Leaders first because we do have a waiting list and we are only permitted to have a certain number of boys at any given time for insurance reasons and we do not want anyone to be disappointed.
On behalf of all the Leaders, Hilary Morrow, Valerie Flack, Alison Jeffrey and Susan Mark, may I say thank you to all parents and guardians for your continued support.
