Activity Badge Courses

The World Faith Badge Night will be on held on Thursday 23rd September when Mr Cyril Rosenberg will provide a tour of the North Belfast Synagogue from 7.00-8.00 p.m. Will Leaders please inform Jenny as soon as possible if your Pack will be attending (numbers will be restricted to 100).

We also plan to run a Sports Enthusiast' badge night within the next few months and hope to organise another swimmers’ night, especially for those wanting to take part in ‘Stage 1’, who may find difficulty in obtaining the badge. On this occasion we will require more help from Leaders who will be prepared to get into the water to safely supervise the boys and girls and give them confidence. Emergency Aid and DIY Badge Courses are being arranged for the autumn. Please let Jenny know if your Pack is interested in taking part in any of these badge courses.

Reports of recent activity badge courses

Science Badge Course

On Saturday 20th March, 50 Cubs and Leaders invaded Gilnahirk Presbyterian Church Hall, where they participated in the Scientist Badge. They had seven sections to go round including Hot Air Balloons, Pin Hole Cameras, Stars and Plants, Compass Making, Electrical Circuits and Seeds and Plants to name but a few, the highlight being yoghurt making which the Cubs enjoyed watching, and ‘gunge’ making of which each Cub took a small sample home (I can only imagine what happened at home). I would like to thank Dr David Bell (30th) and Dr Chris Hardacre (10th) and their colleagues from the Department of Pharmacy and the Medical School at QUB, Dr Karl Malcolm and Dr Sheila Patrick, for helping to organise the different stations and collecting the materials needed. I would also like to thank all of the other Leaders and helpers from 3rd, 10th, 28th and 99th Packs for all of their hard work.

Road Safety and Swimming Badge Courses

In the month of January, we have managed to achieve two more Activity Badges. The first one to be held was the ‘Road Safety Badge’ in which 5 groups attended. We had the Road Safety Officer from Police Service of Northern Ireland, who gave a very informed talk and the boys and girls were able to answer all the questions on Road Safety. This was followed by a short film starring ‘May McFetridge’. I would like to thank Alex and Julie for their most welcoming night and for the juice and crisps for all the Cubs.

On 30th January 41 Cubs, Leaders and parents invaded Avoniel Swimming Pool. All the boys and girls were able to gain badges. This event was organised on our behalf by David and I would like to thank David for all of his hard work, and to all of the Leaders who assisted with examining the badges: Carol (ex 27th BSL), Alex and Julie (99th), Roy and Elizabeth (3rd) and Gary and Jane (28th).

Cyclist Badge Course

On Thursday, 6 November and 13 November 2003 we held the Cyclist badge at St. Brendan’s Hall, Larkfield Road, where we were able to achieve passing 51 activities badges. WELL-DONE CUBS!

I would like to thank all of the Cubs, Leaders and parents who participated in the event, also of course, Tracy Doherty, from the Road Traffic Education Branch. Tracy really was great and very friendly with all of the Cubs. Considering the size of our hall, somehow we managed to fit everyone in especially as on the two nights the weather was wet and windy. The Cubs were rewarded with a special gift to take home.

Again many thanks for all of your help.

Athlete's Badge Course

On Thursday, 23 May 2003, Stormont Grounds were invaded by nearly 70 cubs. While several of the Leaders and parents where setting up the test areas, some of the Park Rangers became most interested in what we were doing. When the boys started throwing the cricket ball the Rangers also had a throw with the ball. When all activities had been set up, the Cubs went round each of the test areas and on obtaining sufficient points moved over to join JOHN CORRY in a thirty a side football match. It seemed to be a great success if you were fortunate to get a kick at the ball. On checking the cards we found that we had managed to achieve 69 badges and 1 Beaver certificate. I would like to thank all the Leaders and parents who took part in the arranging of the stations and helping with the marking of the cards.WELL DONE CUBS!
