East Belfast Cub Scout Crosscountry Race 2004

This year's Cross-country race was held on Saturday 28th February at Stormont Estate. We, this year, changed the Race time to 2.15 p.m. to accommodate those Cubs who have other Saturday morning commitments. Over 40 Cubs entered from the following Packs: - 3rd, 4th, 10th, 27th, 28th, 30th and 99th. Although the day started off frosty (when the ADCs set out the course), the weather improved to near ideal running conditions and the start time rapidly approached. We were to discover at the last minute that some very "Helpful" visitors had decided to either remove some of our direction arrows or re-route them. A quick recce and repair job ensued and the race started slightly late. We estimate the race length to be ~ 1.5miles and the first flyers began to arrive back at the finishing line in about 15minutes.

Surprisingly this year’s winner was from the under 9 age bracket - therefore age is no barrier to success. The results are printed below. It is generally agreed that we should continue with this new start time and it is worth noting too that all competitors and their supporters were away by 3.15 p.m. Well done to all concerned, be that runners, marshals, course setters and supporters

EAST DISTRICT CUB SCOUTS 5-A-SIDE FOOTBALL COMPETITION 2004

The District has an abundance of very keen soccer players who came out in force on Monday 9th March at this year’s competition held in Sydenham Methodist Church Hall - an ideal venue with 2 good sized halls. 12 teams - 3rd A and B, 4th, 7th A and B, 9th A and B, 27th, 28th, 30th, 99th A and B battled for the title of District Champions.

After some very exciting and fraught 1st round ties, 6 teams progressed to the semi-finals and the do or die element of the competition intensified. The 3rd A and the 30th were both successful in reaching the final and with a stalemate 0 - 0 result even after extra time, penalties were to be the decider and from this the 30th came through to be this year’s victorious winners.

For anyone who witnessed the competition - you're lucky, as the atmosphere was electrifying .Overall the Cubs showed some masterful skills but more importantly - good sportsmanship and grace, even in defeat.

East Belfast District Beaver Unihoc Competition

The noise emanating from Sydenham Methodist Church Halls on Saturday 7th February alerted the neighbourhood that something very exciting was happening. That something was the District Beaver Uni-Hoc competition, and boy WAS it something!!! 14 teams representing EVERY group in East Belfast were battling it out for victory. Because of sheer numbers, we had taken over two halls at the church and ran 2 leagues, with 2 semi-finals and the final being played in the larger of them. The excitement was almost too much for our DC who, due to the notable absence of his able assistant, (I suppose we have to wait till next year for the beard to be trimmed again, Alan?) had to try to divide himself between both venues. However, all good things must come to an end, and the semi-finals were played out between teams from 3rd, 4th, 30th and 99th, with 30th A the eventual winners and 4th B runners up. The organisers decided that the other 2 teams played so well that they deserved to have medals too, which should have been presented before this goes to print. Our thanks go to Sydenham Methodist for their hospitality, to Pat and Ann for supplying the tea and coffee, and to all the Beavers and Leaders who took part. We were also very pleased to have Roy, Jenny and Elizabeth from the Fellowship to keep score. We could not have done it without them. We hope to see you ALL again next year.

East Belfast District Cub Scout Quiz

The annual District Cub quiz took place on Monday 9th February and 13 Teams + Leaders fitted cosily into Stormont Presbyterian’s new youth complex. The teams battled it out for 7 rounds on the following subjects:- General Knowledge, Science, Sport, History & Geography, Music, TV & Films, Scouting Knowledge & the inevitable Picture Round.

This year’s questions were set by Paula (ACC Cubs) and judging by the Leaders’ gasps proved to be taken from either MENSA or a PhD student’s finals. The evening flew by and the Cubs were all exhausted towards the end but were quickly rejuvenated with some crisps & drinks. We are indebted to all those “runners”, “markers” & “minders” who ensured the evening ran so smoothly. Technology played a big part as Alex could run off from her laptop the rounds scores and was able to rapidly produce a final result.

1st, 30th Pack 'A' team, 65 points

2nd, 4th Pack 'A' team, 58 points

3rd, 99th Pack 'B' team, 57 points

Congratulations to the 30th A team of Andrew Kernohan, James McNaney, Gareth Thompson and Rob Bennett who won the competition and will be representing East in the Northern Ireland Quiz final in the Cathedral Hall, Enniskillen on Saturday 6th March. We wish them “best of luck”

Cub Scout Mountain-biking Competition 2004

Competitive mountain-biking came early to the District on January 10th with Crawfordsburn being the venue for this year’s event. 25 Cubs from only 4 packs braved the elements and boy, was this a test of endurance and stamina. The course setter Robert Lamont surpassed himself this year by designing a tough and challenging course which included two “death defying ramps”. It is pleasing to note that this course is to be the basis of a permanent feature which can be adapted for all sections. The competition itself was run for three age groups: 8, 9 and 10 years and each race was either 2, 3 or 4 lap duration. All races were closely contested and results are as follows:

8 Years:

1st,Ben McCadden,30th Pack

2nd,Ryan Townsley,3rd Pack

3rd,Gareth Thompson,30th Pack

9 Years:

1st, Andrew Flack,30th Pack

2nd,Matthew Welsh,30th Pack

3rd,David Walker,3rd Pack

10 Years:

1st,Robbie Lamont,30th Pack

2nd,Ryan McKnight,30th Pack

3rd,Damon Mosgrove,10th Pack

1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners went forward to a handicapped Champion of Championship Race and the overall winner was 9 year old Andrew Flack from the 30th Pack. Thanks to all who attended and helped.

EAST BELFAST DISTRICT SCOUT QUIZ

The annual SCOUT QUIZ was held at 73rd HQ, St. Donard’s Parish Church, Bloomfield, on Monday 1/12/03. Eleven teams participated from 7 Troops, namely 4th, 7th, 27th, 28th, 30th, 73rd and 99th. Quizmaster Stephen McCord was ably assisted by Alex Henry and at the end of a keenly contested event, DC Ian Diamond presented the 99th Troop with the Quiz Cup. The 27th Troop was a very close runner-up. The next event for Scouts will be the U12 and U15 5-a-side football competition, to be held in the New Year.

Three inter-Troop competitions have also been held recently in the District:- Volleyball, U15 Floorball and U12 Floorball.

Friday 10th October saw no less than eleven teams compete in the annual volleyball competition at Avoniel Leisure Centre – almost twice the entry from last year! The 4th, 7th, 10th, 27th, 30th, 73rd and the eventual winners, the 99th, were the participating troops. The 7th were the gallant runners-up!

Tuesday 21st October in the 73rd hall was the U15 Floorball competition. 4th, 27th, 73rd, and 99th troops attended. After some keenly contested games the 99th once again were triumphant.

Friday 24th October was the turn of the U12s to show off their floorball skills. The sane troops participated and the 99th defeated the 73rd in the final.

I must say that all events were very enjoyable and played in a good spirit – but we really must do something about the 99th winning all the time!

Stephen Anderson, ADC (Scouts)

East District Beaver Scout Sports 2003

The annual District Sports were held at 9th HQ, Sydenham Methodist Church, on 15th November, with 9 teams from 8 Colonies (4th, 7th, 9th, 10th, 27th, 28th, 30th and 33rd) represented, ensuring a good natured but hotly contested competition throughout the morning, especially in the three-legged race which went to a photo-finish for second place, and in the tug-of-war in which some of the heats almost entered the Guinness Book of Records for the longest ‘tug’ as rival teams dug in for eternity determined not to yield a millimetre. There was also much rivalry in the Leaders’ obstacle race with Ian Fullerton from 9th romping home ahead of Chris Hardacre (10th) and a combined entry of Deputy DC, Alan, plus ‘Giant Teddy Bear’ representing 27th. Alan soon recovered his breath sufficiently to judge the art competition which, as in previous years, attracted a very high standard making the judge’s decision all the more difficult. Congratulations to the Beavers who took part, thanks to the Leaders and parents for bringing them, to 9th for the use of the Watson Hall and for supplying the juice and biscuits, and to DC, Ian, who presented the prizes. The final results were as follows:

Straight Run:

1st C. Morrow (30th); 2nd A. Thompson (33rd);3rd C. Johnston (10th)

Egg and Spoon:

1st C. Heath (4th); 2nd L. Sunerton (9th); 3rd C. Mosgrove (10th)

Sack Race:

1st C. Campbell (27th); 2nd C. Johnston (10th); 3rd R. Gordon (7th)

3-Legged Race:

1st D. Stafford & L. Sunerton (9th);2nd= G. Anderson & C. Morrow (30th); 2nd= I. Hawthorne & C. Hinds (30th)

Belfast County Flag 2003

Members of 10th and 30th Packs gathered with Cubs from other Districts at Ardnavalley on 12th April to compete in the Belfast Cub Scout County Flag competition. Amongst the challenges for our teams this year were a scavenger hunt, mini pioneering, compass, and flag activity. Once again though our own ADC Suzi stole the show for sheer creativity and originality!! Having coerced the assistance of her son Barum, home briefly on leave from Uni in Dublin, Suzi ran her own version of ‘Name That Tune’ with the Cubs trying to play well known tunes on a collection of glass bottles half filled with water. Very entertaining (if not perhaps the most musical performance we’ve ever heard!!!).

The highlight of the competition was of course the lunchtime cooking event although we were concerned that Steve had enlisted some new victims to sample the food this year- surely Herbie McFarland did eventually recover last time????? Has ANYONE seen him since???. We'll let Michael, one of 30th Cubs, describe the gourmet cuisine on offer as listed on the menu he created for the ‘eat@30e café’:

TODAY’S LUNCHTIME SPECIAL

Chef’s Uniquely Brilliant Soup

-a blend of seasonal vegetables simmered to perfection

Chef’s Unbeatable Beef Surprise

-beef cooked slowly over an open fire with carrots and onions, served with delicious mashed potatoes and worth the wait!

(We’ll leave it to your imagination to define ‘simmered to perfection on an open fire’ and to guess just how surprised the judges were by the beef!!!)

Congratulations to:-

30th B Team: Rory, Niall, Tom, Michael, Richard and Matthew

We’ve promised to take both 30th teams to Pizza Hut for a decent meal to celebrate their win,

David, CSL 30th

East Belfast District Beaver Unihoc Competition

This year we were pleased to have 14 teams entered which made it tight for time, we may have to make other arrangements for next year, but let’s see if it is possible to get all colonies to attend next year; the competition was close right to the very end with the final between the 27th and 99th with the 27th the winners. Both teams represented East District in the county finals, where the 27th finished 2nd overall. Many thanks from your ADCs to all the boys and Leaders for participating, without you there would be no competition. Thank you all,

Stephen Hand, ADC (Beavers)

East District Cub Scout Quiz

10 teams representing 5 Packs (3rd, 10th, 28th, 30th and 99th) took part in the District Cub Scout Quiz held at the Bill Elliott Hall, Tamar Street on 10th February. Many thanks to Jane and Gary and the 28th Group for hosting the competition and providing refreshments, to the team of markers- Julie, Jamie and Pamela (MENSA membership application forms in the post!), who sorted the clever clogs from the dunces, and to ADC Suzi ‘I can be as scary as Anne Robinson’ Jeffries who asked the questions (loved Suzi’s Bugs Bunny impression- ‘What’s up doc?’). DC Ian was on hand too to present medals to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed teams at the end of the evening. Congratulations to the winners, Jordan Douglas, Ryan McKnight, Niall Morrow and Richard Anderson from 30th A Team who went on to represent East District at the NI Final in March, finishing in an impressive 3rd Place just behind teams from Jordanstown and Londonderry.

Scout Section Floorball and Football competitions

Tuesday 11th February saw the under 15 floorball competition held at St Donard's CoI - 73rd HQ. The 10th, 27th, 73rd and 99th Troops participated in this keenly fought competition, with the final result that 99th 'A' defeated 99th 'B' 1 - 0 in the final after extra time.

The Friday night of the following week (21st) was the under 12 Floorball competition held at Belmont Presbyterian Church (99th HQ). Six teams from 4 troops participated - 4th, 10th, 27th & 99th. Again, this was a very competitive event with 99th again triumphant in the final against the 10th.

No less than 14 teams turned up for the under 15 5-a-side Football competition at Avoniel Leisure on Friday 28th February. The 3rd, 4th, 7th 10th, 24th, 27th, 30th, 73rd & 99th Troops flexed their 'Beckham' skills against one another. Such was the number of matches played that we just had time to play the final between 99th & 24th before the leisure centre staff turned the lights off! The result - 1 - 0 to 99th, definitely the Troop to beat this year! Many thanks to everyone who participated, but especially to Ian Hall, SL 4th , Owen Watson, Young Leader 4th , Mark Hallis, ASL 73rd and of course Stephen McCord, ADC Scouts, for all their help.

Stephen Anderson, ADC (Scouts)

Belfast County Swimming Gala 2003

East District was represented at the County Gala at the Robinson Centre on 25th January by more than 20 Cub Scouts from 10th, 27th, 30th, 73rd and 99th Packs, who faced steep competition this year from the other Districts, particularly the team from South District which included Sarah Kelly, a very fast senior swimmer who left all the boys from East in her wake. Nonetheless, East was eventually victorious on the night, retaining the Inter-District Armstrong Cup by an impressive margin. The lads from East also amassed a total of 11 individual medals, together with gold for the official District relay team and bronze for another ‘unofficial team’ made up entirely of additional Cubs from East. Well done to all the winners and our thanks to ACC Steve and his team for a well-organised and enjoyable event.

East’s winners were as follows:- Philip Hawthorne (Gold, Senior Backstroke; Bronze, Senior Breaststroke and Senior Freestyle); Brett Hillis (Gold, Junior Backstroke and Junior Freestyle); Niall Morrow (Silver, Senior Backstroke); Michael McMillan (Silver, Senior Breaststroke); Oliver Matthews (Silver, Junior Freestyle); Jack Hewitt (Silver, Senior Freestyle); Matthew Cahoon (Bronze, Junior Backstroke); Richard Anderson (Bronze, Junior Breaststroke).

Inter-Troop Quiz

The first District Quiz was held at 73rd HQ, St Donard's Parish Church, Bloomfield, on Monday 27th January 2003. Ten teams participated from 6 Troops - namely, 3rd, 4th, 27th, 30th, 73rd and 99th, 40 Scouts in all. Quizmaster Stephen McCord presided, ably assisted by Alex Henry. Questions were asked on a range of topics, as well as general Scouting, and at the end of a very enjoyable and successful evening D.C. Ian Diamond presented one of the teams from the 99th Troop (Belmont Presbyterian) with the winner's cup.

The under 12 5-a-side football competition held at Avoniel Leisure Centre on Friday 31st January 2003 was an equally enjoyable event and a pleasure to run. The turn out of 5 teams from three troops - 7th, 27th and 99th - could be described as disappointing, especially considering it was a football competition; however, on the plus side, it meant more action for the boys with little rest and no 'hanging around'. Every team played each other, with the top two teams reaching the final, which was keenly contested between the 7th & 99th, the latter triumphing 2 - 0. A.D.C. Alan Campbell presented the medals. So, the placings were: 1st - 99th B, 2nd - 7th, 3rd - 27th A, 4th - 99th A and 5th - 27th B. Many thanks to my colleague Stephen McCord who refereed all the matches - good for him! - he even brought along the DISTRICT BANNER.

Stephen Anderson, ADC (Scouts)

East District Cub Scout Mountain Biking Competition 2003

The Mountain Bike competition was held on Saturday 19th January. 6 Cub Scout Packs took part with 28 boys in all competing for the medals and the overall trophy. The boys were given medals as prizes and the Champion was given a trophy. Thanks go to Robert and Roy Lamont for their help and to Elizabeth for keeping the score of the winners and for registration at the start of the competition. Also to Alan Campbell our Deputy DC for handing out the prizes.

NI SLOT-CAR COMPETITION (BELFAST HEAT)

9 members of 30th Pack represented East District at the Belfast Heat of the Slot-car competition (Cub Scouts) on Saturday 7th December, racing against young Eddie Irvines and Ralph Schumachers from North and South Districts. Although Jordan and Andrew managed to battle their way into the final at the end of the morning session, victory eluded them both in the rally car section in the follow on afternoon heats and they finished overall just outside the rankings, narrowly failing to qualify for the final at Crawfordsburn and the chance to win a scaletrex set of their own. Commiserations to both and many thanks to Sinclair and to Colin, David and Joanne from the Crawfordsburn Wardens’ Team for a well organised competition.

EAST DISTRICT CUB SCOUTS 5-A-SIDE FOOTBALL COMPETITION

Monday 18th and Tuesday 26th November saw 14 teams taking part in the above competition. It was great to see nearly all the Packs involved and especially our new Pack from 28th. The girls with the help of the boys gave a good account and were narrowly beaten by 73rd Pack. It was a pleasure to meet Tim McCann from Glentoran Football Club, who signed many autographs, and promised to play the winning team with other players from his club.

The quarter finals and finals were hard fought matches and 10th scored one goal to beat 30th in the final.

Good sportsmanship was shown throughout the competition. Well done to all who took part!

John and Suzi, ADCs (Cub Scouts)

Scout District Volleyball Competition

The inter troop volleyball competition was held at Avoniel Leisure Centre on Friday 4th October. Five troops participated, namely 4th, 7th, 27th, 73rd and 99th. After a series of matches in which each team played one another, the 7th & 99th ‘A’ team played a very close final, with the 99th ‘A’ team triumphant. DC Ian Diamond presented the new Volleyball trophy to the winners and runners up medals to the gallant 7th. The 4th Troop was 3rd. Thanks to 73rd, 4th, 27th,7th and 99th for their support. We look forward to the inter troop quiz at the beginning of December.

Stephen McCord and Stephen Anderson, ADCs Scouts

District Scout Football and Floorball Competitions

Stephen Anderson, ADC (Scouts)

East District Cub Scout Cross-Country Race

On a blustery, wintry early Saturday morning 2 East Belfast Cub ADCs braved the elements to set up this year's event. Due to restrictions placed on us by Stormont Estate Management we were confined to the 'quagmire' that is part of the green area left of the main entrance. In order to add some mystique & excitement to this year's race it was decided to run it anti-clockwise compared to former years. The course began with a 'slog' - a 3/4 mile slow incline which quickly sorted the "men from the boys" & the "women from the girls" (Yes we were delighted to have 3 girls enter from the 28th for the first time and they showed some of their male counterparts a clean pair of heels !!) Sadly only 38 entrants participated from ONLY 7 packs - What's Wrong???? We do hope all Cubs were told (reference was made to it in the year planner & also in Scouting East) After the initial stampede the race on a very heavy field took its toll and the runners soon began to spread out and after what appeared an eternity the race concluded as follows:

Overall Winner: Rory Foye (30th Pack)

Over 9s

1st: R.Foye (30th Pack)

2nd: P.McConnell (10th Pack)

3rd: M.Blease (99th Pack)

Under 9s

1st: R.Bell (73rd Pack)

2nd: D.Mosgrove (10th Pack)

3rd: D.McBride (3rd Pack)

Winning Pack

10th Pack (Team of 4: 2 over 10, 2 under 10)

DC Ian Diamond at the presentation ceremony paid thanks to all who had entered, Leaders for their assistance, family and friends who supported the Cubs.

NB we have 2 apologies.

1.To Alex sorry you didn't receive your entry form/letter

2.Did anyone spot the deliberate mistake in the letter - yes 9th April- a typographical error not spotted by our proof reader(s) – oops!

Suzi and John ( ADCs Cubs)

Start of the race at 12.00 noon Saturday 9th March

The winner and the first girl home (from 30th and 28th Packs, respectively)

Cub Scout Mountain Biking Competition

Last month saw the return of the Mountain Bike competition after an absence of several years since the last time this event took place in Crawfordsburn. This time we were based in the dog training field within the grounds of the Stormont Estate. More than 40 eager Cubs (from 3rd, 7th, 10th, 24th, 30th, 33rd and 99th Packs) and supporters turned up on a blustery and wet Saturday in late January, undeterred by the bad weather and water-logged field, indeed most of the Cubs were more than happy to mess about in the mud between races! A hotly contested competition over several laps of the course, with all the excitement and lack of predictability to match the Grand National saw the medals evenly distributed between the Packs at the end. Many thanks to Roy Lamont, his son Robert, Elizabeth (ACSL 3rd) and Suzi (ADC, Cubs) for organising and running a great competition, and to Jamie, Richard and Adam (10th) who helped to set up the course. Results were as follows:

8 year olds’ race:

Gold, Robbie Lamont,30th Pack

Silver,Ryan McKnight,30th Pack

Bronze,Darren McBride,3rd Pack

9 year olds’ race:

Gold, Jack Gowdy,10th Pack

Silver, Matthew Neill, 3rd Pack

Bronze, Paul Gibson, 30th Pack

10 year olds’ race:

Gold, Matthew Tipping, 99th Pack

Silver, Philip Hutchinson, 33rd Pack

Bronze, Ross White, 30th Pack

Northern Ireland Orienteering Competition at Crawfordsburn

East District was represented by six teams from 10th and 30th Packs and 3 teams from 24th and 99th Troops at this year’s event on 9th February. The Cubs and Scouts braved heavy rain and muddy conditions to complete the course, returning sometime later wet and bedraggled with soggy scorecards but undiminished enthusiasm! Unfortunately however, no medals were to return to East on this occasion, possibly explained partly by the fact that at least one Cub was distracted from the competition and was observed joining the numbers in the tuck shop queue before handing in his score card in this timed event. Never mind! Many thanks to Colin, Chris, Jenny and the Wardens’ team for organising the competition.

Beaver Scout Uni-hoc competition

Saturday 9th February and it was pistols at dawn (or rather hockey sticks at 1.30 pm) for the eager Beavers of East Belfast. 12 teams, representing 8 Colonies, assembled at the 7th H.Q. to do battle, and do battle they did! With 30 games to be played, the whole operation proceeded with military precision, until the Grand final. If enthusiasm was the only factor in winning, we would have had 12 winners. Unfortunately only one team could carry off the trophy, but which one?

It was fantastic to see a team from the 28th colony, resplendent in their tee shirts and scarves, and making a great impression by springing a big surprise(and secret weapon). Their team included something never before seen at a Beaver event-A GIRL-.Well done to Courtney for her bravery in the field dominated by boys. Unfortunately they did not win, but let's hope we see them at more district events in the future. So if they did not win, who did carry off that magnificent piece of silverware? Could it have been the 4th? or the 7th? or indeed the 10th? We already know it wasn't the 28th. But was it the 24th, or the 27th? the 30th or maybe the 99th? Well, after a close run, there was a play off in Division 1 between 10th A and 30th A which 10th A won. The Grand Final was between 10th A and 30th B and much to the surprise of the DC (and the leaders) the trophy came home to roost in Oakland Avenue.

It was a very weary bunch who left for home following an action packed afternoon, full of excitement and passion which even Old Trafford would have been proud of, and looking forward already to next year. Our D.C. was suitably impressed with the efforts as he was there in his role of honorary Beaver leader 28th Colony. Special thanks must go to Deirdre and Harry Kissick who burned the midnight oil arranging the leagues and matches-not an east task with such a big field. Thanks also to our Deputy D.C Alan, who presented the prizes, and found a new job for when he retires from active Scouting. We have offered him the job of door supervisor (bouncer) at all Beaver events. Well done to all the colonies who took part and congratulations on your behaviour. Here's to next year and an even bigger entry- but be warned. The cup stays in Oakland Avenue!!!!!!!!!!

This year’s District Quiz was hosted by 9th Group at Sydenham Methodist Church on Monday 11th February, with 10 teams entered representing 6 Packs- 3rd, 9th, 10th, 27th, 30th and 99th. With questions that would have challenged Einstein, let alone your average Cub Leader, ‘ask the audience’ wasn’t really an option, and with all mobile ‘phones busy as various Akelas tried to track down missing team members who hadn’t quite made it to Sydenham for the 7.00pm start, the Cubs opted for ‘fifty fifty’ or in other words, completely wild guesses and random answers. It didn’t take our Quiz Master, ADC Suzi, too long however to find the weakest link- the Leaders from 3rd, 10th and 30th Packs (‘self included) who had been press-ganged into helping out had difficulty marking the Cubs’ answers even when the questions were explained to them and the correct answers placed on the table in front of them!! Its just as well we weren’t actually taking part or we might have really embarrassed ourselves! Many thanks to John and Suzi, and to Pat, Ann and Jonathan (9th) for setting up the Hall and laying on the refreshments. Congratulations to the winning team of Max Porter, Michael Magill, Rory Foye and Tom Noteman (30th A Team) who will represent East District at the NI Final at Cookstown in March. Full results were as follows:

1st Place, 30th Pack ‘A’ Team, 65 points

2nd Place, 27th Pack, 58 points

3rd Place, 9th Pack, 54 points

4th Place, 10th Pack ‘B’ Team, 52 points

5th Place, 10th Pack ‘A’ Team, 50 points

6th Place, 99th Pack ‘B’ Team, 49 points

7th Place, 99th Pack ‘A’ Team, 46 points

8th Place, 3rd Pack ‘A’ Team, 44 points

9th Place, 30th Pack ‘B’ Team, 42 points

10th Place, 3rd Pack ‘B’ Team, 33 points

Beaver Sports, Saturday 10th November 2001

A fun filled morning with 12 teams representing 9 Colonies from East happened at Avoneil Leisure Centre recently. The boys were all brimming with enthusiasm, if not always blessed with the necessary height or strength to overcome the opposition. Spectators and leaders alike went home hoarse from cheering their favourite team. All the Beaver ADCs tried to remain impartial without much success. Even our favourite DC was suitably impressed by the turnout which was almost doubled from last year. He also suggested that it would be nice to have all 13 Colonies represented at the forthcoming Unihoc in February. So congratulations and well done to the boys from 4th, 7th, 9th, 10th, 24th, 27th , 30th, 33rd and 99th who participated and special congratulations to 9th Colony who were overall winners.

Crawfordsburn Cub Scout Challenge

Congratulations to 30th Belfast team of Chris Cahoon, Conor Winning, Ryan Harbinson, Paul Gibson, Jordan Douglas and Ryan McKnight who fought off fierce competition from teams from across Belfast, Counties Down and Antrim to win the Autumn NI Cub Scout Challenge event held at Crawfordsburn on Saturday 13th October, despite managing to smash both of their eggs which would have been worth 5,000 bonus points each intact. Well done and thanks to Wardens Vic and Eric and their team for another super day at the Burn, and for coming up with yet more new challenges to stretch the Cubs to the limit. If YOUR Pack hasn’t entered before, why not get in contact with Crawfordsburn and book your place for April 2002.

County Flag Competition (Cub Scouts)

East was represented at the Cub Scout County Flag Competition at Ardnavalley on 19th May by teams from 4th, 10th, 30th and 99th Packs. Well done to all 4 teams who achieved the County Standard and did East proud. There was a good mix of badgework bases and fun activities (although no first aid, knotting or map and compass this year) and a lot of hard effort was put in to planning the event by ACC Steve Hoskins (special mention in this Prestigious Publication as requested by Steve during the closing ceremony- my bill for this is in the post! Ed) and his team of willing conscripts, especially our own ADCs, Deirdre and Harry, Carolyn White (South), and Herbie McFarland from Holywood who this year were spared from sampling camp cooking but subjected instead to about 60 eager Cubs let loose on a lunchtime Nature activity supplied by the Belfast Conservation Volunteers but run by our own aforementioned ‘volunteers’. I reckon if they ever see another packet of plaster of paris it will be too soon!!

Special mention also to East ADC Suzi and daughter Cherry, Two ‘Brave’ Ladies, who decided to stage ‘Ready, Steady, Cook!’ Cub-style in the Pathfinder Pavilion resulting in surprisingly edible fruit salad and rice krispie buns and a chalet that stank of rotten egg mayonnaise by the end of the afternoon! We also hope that East’s other ADC, John, has not lost any fingers as a result of plunging them repeatedly into a bucket of ice-cold water to retrieve the coins the Cubs had to throw in. (some of East’s Leaders were tempted to nip out to a Pet shop at lunchtime to buy a goldfish and slip it in during the afternoon activities pretending it was a piranha!!)

Congratulations to 99th Pack who finished in 3rd place just behind the 4th Pack who marked their return to the competition after several years absence with an impressive second place and the Novice Trophy. However, your Editor was startled but overjoyed to learn that 30th Pack were this year’s winners and had brought the County Flag back again to our District. So a clean sweep then, 1…2 and 3 for East in 2001!!

Special congratulations to 30th Team, led by Chris Wilson, and including James Thompson, Chris Harvey, Ross Clarke, Stuart McGilton and Patrick Morrow. I’m really proud of all of you and very happy to shout you all dinner at Pizza Hut as suggested by our County Commissioner. Well done…

David, CSL 30th

Ps. All in East hope that ACC Steve’s throat recovers soon after he gave his all and scaled new ‘heights’ in the final campfire song. Ever thought of a career in opera?? Pavorotti eat your heart out!!!! (But who is paying for the smashed windows in the American Consulate Building next door we wonder???)

County Flag Competition (Scouts)

This year’s competition was held in glorious camping weather over the weekend of 11th-13th May at Crawfordsburn while most of North Down basked in a rare heat-wave. East was represented by Scouts from 10th Troop, and 7th and 99th Troops both of whom were returning after an absence of several years from the competition. Well done to all three Troops, especially the 10th who won the Rotary Ambulance Event and were narrowly beaten into a very respectable 2nd place by the this year’s winners of the Flag, 77th Belfast (West).

Cub ADCs undaunted by Foot and Mouth Crisis

The annual East District Cub Scout Cross-Country Race was one of the few sporting fixtures in March that was not cancelled due to the current Foot and Mouth outbreak. So on the morning of Saturday 10th March, over 60 Cubs, accompanied by Leaders, parents and an assortment of dogs (including one proudly modelling a 4th scarf!) eagerly trudged through the disinfectant laid down at the entrance to the Stormont grounds (well several of the Cubs lingered and jumped about quite enthusiastically on the sponge mat- just to be extra sure that their trainers had been thoroughly disinfected!) and made their way up the road to where John and Suzi were just tying the cord to the last pole that marked out the course. A large field saw 10 of the 13 Packs in East represented this year. As usual in this hotly contested event, several of the runners, eager to be off and jostling for position at the front, fell ‘at the first fence’ but they soon picked themselves up and carried on regardless! A gruelling course saw the runners make their way up the hill, across the road and then disappear among the trees before emerging again some considerable time later near the finish. Congratulations to the individual winner, Jason Harvey, the individual winner, and 24th Pack, who were presented with the John McKirgan Trophy by the DC. Many thanks to John and Suzi for setting the course….I think some of the Leaders and parents would have struggled to keep up with the Cubs and make it to the finish…we’re sure Suzi must have been exhausted working her way round all those poles with the string!! Results were as follows:

Individual Race:

1st Jason Harvey (24th)

2nd Christopher Woods (7th)

3rd Andrew Hodgins (24th)

4th Richard Henry (99th)

5th Ross Clarke (30th)

6th Rory Foye (30th)

7th Niall Hodgins (24th)

3rd 10th Pack 183 points

4th 33rd Pack 207 points

5th 4th Pack 208 points

6th 9th Pack 215 points

7th 27th Pack 248 points

East 5-a-side Football Competition

The Scouts 5-a-side competition was held at Avoneil Leisure Centre on Tuesday 6th and 13th March 2001. Altogether 8 Troops participated over the two evenings: namely 4th, 7th, 10th, 27th, 30th, 33rd, 73rd and 99th. After a keenly fought contest the results were as follows:-

Under 16 years- Winners 99th; Runners-up 7th

Both winners and runners-up go through to the County Final to be held at Maysfield Leisure Centre on Saturday 24th March. Congratulations to the winners and to everyone who took part in what was a successful competition.

East District Beaver Scout Uni-hoc Competition 2001

image49.gif

Saturday 10th February 2001 and the HQ of 7th Belfast Scout Group has been besieged. 1,000s (so it seems!) of small people in grey, accompanied by bigger and ‘slightly’ older people have arrived for to do battle for the honour of winning the Beaver Unihoc Competition. 11 teams representing 9 Colonies have been practising their dribbling skills for weeks now and the moment of truth has arrived. The battles are tough and exhausting (not least for the big people whose number have been boosted by lots of parents). The games are close- no cricket scores here, but eventually a winner is declared. Our able Deputy DC (who sported a new hair-cut and freshly trimmed beard in honour of the occasion) was, I think, extremely impressed by the enthusiasm surrounding him and was called upon to present the trophy.I suppose you would like to know who the winners were? Well put together the venue, the fact that the very impartial referee belongs to the same group and what have you got? That’s right! Well done to 7th Colony- worthy victors. Mr.Diamond has said he would like to see the buzz back in East. Well he missed it this time (rumour has it that he was out of the country lending support at a rival sporting event!!), but let’s look forward to next year and make it an even bigger buzz for him to hear. Our thanks also go to TESCO Connswater for supplying vouchers which provided half-time (much needed!) refreshments. Thanks also to the folk at Dundonald Methodist for hosting the event. See you ALL there next year, same place, different time!

East District Cub Scout Quiz

The District Heat of the annual Cub Scout Quiz took place at 9th HQ (Sydenham Methodist Church) on Monday 29th January. 12 teams in total participated representing 7 Packs (3rd, 9th, 10th, 27th, 30th, 33rd and 99th). Well done to Suzi and John on running an excellent competition and many thanks to Ann, Pat and all at 9th for hosting the event and keeping the marking team supplied with mugs of tea and chocolate ‘biccies’! The Editor suspects that Suzi may once have been either a teacher or an examination invigilator judging by the serious tone she injected into ‘Don’t turn your pages over until you are told to do so!’ Congratulations to the eventual winners of a closely contested quiz, 33rd Pack ‘B’ team, who will represent East at the Northern Ireland Final in March. The top 5 teams were as follows:

1st 33rd Pack B Team 56.25 points

2nd 27th Pack A Team 55.75 points

3rd 30th Pack A Team 55.00 points

4th 99th Pack A Team 49.75 points

5th 10th Pack B Team 48.50 points

Slot-Car Competition 2001

image195.gif

The Belfast Heats of the annual Slot-Car competition were held at 78th (North) HQ on the Antrim Road on 2nd and 3rd December 2000. East Cubs were represented by David Jordan from 99th Pack and Ross Clarke, Paul Johnston, James Thompson, Patrick Thompson, Paul Gibson, Ryan Harbinson and Christopher Harvey from 30th Pack who faced stiff competition from Cubs representing a number of Packs from North District. Thanks to Colin and Sinclair who organised the event and congratulations to David (99th) and Ross (30th) who eventually finished 1st and 2nd respectively in the Belfast Heat and progress to the NI Final at Crawfordsburn in March.

Crawfordsburn Cub Challenge 2000

30th Pack entered a team in the second Crawfordsburn Challenge Day on Saturday 7th October. Events included archery, penalty kick competition, grass-sledging, assault course time trial, plate golf and lots of crystal maze style challenges involving snuffing out candles, hooking tin cans and crossing imaginary minefields. Our Field Officer, Sinclair Trotter, was also on hand to run a slot-car competition during the afternoon. At the start of the competition, each team was asked to look after 2 eggs, which had to go everywhere the Cubs did during the day. The Cubs received 5000 points per egg produced intact at the end. Although one of 30th team’s eggs came to an untimely and messy end during the grass sledging, the Leaders were amazed that of all people Seconder Paul managed to preserve the second egg until the very end. By the end of the day, the Cubs were ready for home, tired, covered in mud and blissfully happy. Many thanks to the wardens Eric and Vic who ran the event and congratulations to 30th Team of Peter, Paul, David, David, Luke and Jeff, the only team incidentally from Belfast County, who finished a very respectable 4th place behind the winners from Donaghadee. Vic and Eric hope to run another challenge day soon and we would definitely recommend it to other Packs in East.

Beaver Sports, Saturday 18th November 2000

Teams from 4th, 7th, 9th, 10th and 99th Colonies (and Leaders from 27th) converged on Avoneil Leisure Centre to take part in the Annual Beaver Sports. Events included running, relay, sack-race, potato and spoon, obstacle, three-legged race and tug-of-war. The obstacle race was expertly demonstrated by one of our ADCs who showed the boys his version of how the race should be run. Some of the Leaders present thought they’d get in on the act too much to the amusement of the audience! During a slight hitch in the proceedings (Someone forgot the tug-of-war rope and was despatched to find it), the certificates were awarded to each Colony present, and to 1st, 2nd and 3rd places of each of the other events. The Design a Beaver Uniform was also judged during this time- our new DC having to deliberate between space suits complete with rocket roller blades (optional extras of course) and the retro-style cowboy look with gun belt and guns! Eventually Mr.Diamond settled on the design of sweatshirt (with elasticated waist) by a member of 9th Colony and they returned to Sydenham clutching the District Trophy and armfuls of certificates (any chance of Mr.Diamond and 9th Ameek, Pat Gordon, modelling these designs at an impromptu Fashion Show at the next Scouters’ Meeting???? Also any truth to the rumour that Elizabeth’s own entry, dubbed the ‘FireMan Sam' look was disqualified??- Ed). Each of the entries was of a very high standard, so well done to all of the boys who took part. The return of ‘Mr.Forgetful’ and the missing rope meant that that Tug-of –War league could begin and was eventually won by the team from the 4th Colony. The overall winners of Sports Day were 4th Colony who took the shield and individual medals back to Knock. The one noticeable thing was the poor attendance by the Colonies in the District. It would be nice to see this event supported better in the future with at least one team from each Colony competing. So make a date for 2001 and lets create our own East Belfast Beaver Olympics!

East District Cub Scout Cross Country Race 2000

wpe4.jpg (3116 bytes)

Approximately 70 runners, representing 3rd, 7th, 10th, 24th, 30th and 99th Packs, and a large supporting cast of parents, grandparents, Leaders and assorted family pets turned out on a crisp Saturday morning in late March for the annual East District Cub Scout Cross-County Race in the grounds of the Stormont Estate. Suzi and John, who had been up since dawn setting the course, took pity on us all this year and moved the finish to spare us the final steep climb up the hill, which almost finished a few of the Leaders, if not the Cubs last year! Congratulations to Matthew McErlane (30th), who set a brisk pace to win the individual race, and to the 30th Pack who overcame a sharky start when 3 of the team tripped over each other's feet as the race was just beginning, to win the John McKirgan Team Trophy. many thanks to John and Suzi for organising the event and to Deputy DC, Ian, who presented the trophies. Final results were as follows:

East District Beaver Scout Uni-hoc Competition 2000

image49.gif

East Beavers had a wonderful night at Stormont Presbyterian Church Hall at our District Uni-hoc competition. Ten teams entered from eight colonies and were divided into two sections, where they played in a 'round robin' competition rather than a Knockout event. This meant that everybody got at least four games. We started at 6.30pm, intending to finish by 8.30pm but as the games progressed they got tighter and as one section reached the semi-final stage we ended up having a playoff to see who would go through to the Final. It was 9th Beavers who eventually won through with 24th Colony joining them from the other section. The final was a very close run game with both teams on three points at the end, then there was a deadly hush as the extra number was called out and as the two boys rushed to get their sticks everyone in the hall erupted. The noise was deafening and as the boys battled over the puck the goal was finally scored by 9th. The winners (9th )and runners-up (24th )attended the County Finals at Avoneil Leisure Centre on Saturday 11th March. Despite a valiant effort by East's Beavers we did not return with the County Trophy this year.

East District Cub Scout Roller Blade Hockey Competition 2000

image196.gif

The Roller Blade Hockey Competition took place again this year at Ballymacarrett Leisure Centre on Saturday 26th February. Despite a low turnout, there was keen competition between the participating Packs. A young star to watch for the future is Cameron Mossgrove (aged 4) who staged an unscheduled one-man pitch invasion and had a few successful touches of the puck before being recaptured by Mum, Elaine. Despiter this ruse, 30th Pack 'A' Team (Neal, Kyle, Chris, Matthew and Peter) still managed to narrowly defeat 10th Pack in the final. The Cubs who attended all enjoyed the event very much. Special thanks are due to referee, Stephen Hand (ADC,Beavers) and to John and Suzi (ADCs, Cubs) for all their hard work.

Northern Ireland Orienteering Competition 2000

image34.gif

East was represented at the annual NI Orienteering competition at Crawfordsburn by 7 teams of Scouts from 99th Troop in the senior event and by 5 teams from 30th Pack in the junior event. Congratulations to 99th Troop and to Neil and Andrew (30th Pack) on bringing both of the brand new Millennium Trophies back to East District. Many thanks to Colin Turtle and his team on organsing a super competition.

East District Scout Floorball Competition

image43.gif

The District Floorball Competition was held at 9th HQ, Sydenham Methodist Church Hall, on consecutive Wednesday evenings- 26th January for the under-13s and 2nd February for the under-16s. Four Troops participated in the under 13s section- 9th , 10th , 33rd , and 99th and four in the under-16s section -4th , 9th , 10th , and 27th . Both competitions were keenly contested with the 10th winning the under-13s section and 9th winning the under-16s section. Judging by the enthusiasm for a competition that hasn't been run for a number of years, hopefully this competition will run again next year.

Slot-Car Competition 2000

image195.gif

The Belfast Heats of the annual NI Slot-car Competition were held at 64th HQ on Saturday 12th February (Cubs)and Sunday 13th February (Scouts). East was represented by 10 Cubs from 30th Pack and 10 Scouts from 27th and 30th Troops. Congratulations to Matthew who won a fiercely contested final, narrowly defeating Nathan (81st South) and to Kyle who came 3rd . In the Scout Section, Ross, Adam and Alan, all 30th came 1st, 3rd and 4th in the Final.

Matthew went on to win the NI Cub Scout Final at Crawfordsburn on 11th March while Alan was runner-up at the Scout Final on 12th March.

East Belfast District Cub Scout Gala 1999

The annual District swimming gala was held on Friday 26th November at Campbell College. We had entries from 5 Packs: 10th, 24th, 30th, 33rd and 99th for the six individual events and team relay:

The Bolton Shield, which is awarded to the Pack which accumulates the greatest number of points from the heats, was won by 30th Pack for the second year in succession (and once again the 30th Akela ended up in the Pool- those 10th Leaders are such bad sports!) Many thanks to all the participants, Leaders and spectators who supported the event. Special thanks and the usual 'bonus pay' goes to the lane judges, scorers and starter who helped the event to run smoothly.
