Miniature Cooking with Almonds

1-2 almonds can be placed onto a length of wire (20-30 cm) and held over a candle flame until they catch fire and start to burn. Almonds contain oil which is a good source of fuel for cooking. Miniature pans can be made from aluminium foil (discarded Chinese takeaway or meat pie containers are also good for this purpose) and a handle made for the pan with another loop of sturdy wire about 20-30 cm in length. Once lit, the nuts will burn vigorously for 5 minutes and the heat generated can be used to cook food in the pan by holding the nuts directly underneath the pan. Cub Scouts can cook small pieces of bacon, sausage, potato bread etc. or alternatively apple, banana etc. Miniature cooking is an ideal outdoors activity for Pack Nights or camp but can also be done indoors in the event of wet weather!

The Generals Game

An outdoor game played in a large area (field or forest park)and suitable for Cub Scouts or Scouts. The Scouts are divided into two teams (rival armies) and establish bases at opposite ends of the field. Each person is given a card with an army rank and score (each team has an identical set of cards). The objective is to identify and capture the enemy team's 5-star General who can only be captured by the opposing team's secret agent (spy). Players try to catch members of the opposing team; at each encounter whoever has the higher rank captures the other player and takes him back to their base. Prisoners can be freed if one of their own team reaches the enemy base without capture and sets them free. The secret agent is very important; only he can catch the 5-star General but as the secret agent has the lowest rank he can be captured by everyone else except the 5-star General and his identity must be protected at all costs! The game ends when one of the 5-star Generals is caught. The theme can be adapted to suit a theme e.g. Robin Hood's Merry Men and the Sheriff's Men; Cowboys and Indians etc.

Sample cards for this game are available in pdf format. To view and/or print these you will need to download Adobe Acrobat Reader which can be obtained from the company at no cost via the link above.
