Letter from New York

I received the letter from East District yesterday and was very touched by the outpouring of friendship and love from the Scouts and their families in Belfast. Your words are very comforting to us as we try to deal with this horrific tragedy. Many of those lost were Scouting leaders or parents of Cub and Boy Scouts. The lost of these individuals has been felt by all Scouters across the country and the world. Scouts from 26 countries have sent their condolences to the people of New York. I contacted someone from the Greater New York Councils. His name is Dave Gibbs. He is the Manhattan District Scout Executive. The World Trade Centers were located in the Borough of Manhattan. He was most comforted to hear your letter and would be very happy to receive the book of condolences that your District is preparing and present it to the Scouts and people of New York.

Thank you so much for your letter. We lost a friend who worked in the World Trade Center. We are still trying to sort out why this happened. Two weeks ago I took my family to "Ground Zero", the site of the World Trade Center, so we could say our prayers to those lost and give support to the fireman, policeman and other workers who are tying to find survivors and clean what is left of the buildings. I was a very moving experience that we will never forget as we move forward with our lives. I hope that someday we can meet so I can shake your hands in brotherhood and friendship.

Yours in Scouting,

Patrick Polasek, Den Leader, 'Cub Scout Pack 82’

Hi

I just came across your web site while surfing around.   I am a great fan of Yosemite National Park which led me to this community and I am from Belfast which attracted me to your site.

I was a leader in Scouting for 22 years, most of those in Northern Ireland and some in East Belfast.  I was an ASL with Colin Kirkwood for a number of  years and my parents continue in their commitment to Stormont Presbyterian Church.  I still remember fondly my camps with them at Ely Lodge in Fermanagh and Saintfield Demesne.  Most of my service in Belfast was in South as CSL in 11th (Fleming Fulton), ACSL in 54th St Thomas' and as ADC (Extension) in South.

I moved to the District of East Essex in 1987 and quickly became involved as GSL of firstly 1st Silver End and then 3rd Witham.  I now live in London although I am not at the moment active.

I greatly enjoyed working at Lakeland 82, Portumna 85 and Gosford 89. I was subcamp leader at the Essex Jamborees of 1992 and 1996.  From a meeting at the 1992 jamboree I was able to work on the staff of the American National Jamboree in 1993, an experience I will never forget.  Who knows I may be able to visit your next jamboree in Ballymoney as I still have many friends in Northern Ireland Scouting.  I have many great memories of my days there among them, helping with the training team at Crawfordsburn and the Belfast Gang show at the Opera house.

Good luck with your continuing work.

From the Northern Ireland Hospice Children's Service

To East Belfast District Beaver and Cub Scouts

Many thanks for forwarding the collection (£305) from your Christingle Service in support of our Appeal to establish Nothern Ireland's first Children's Hospice Service. Please pass on our thanks to all the Beavers, Cubs, their families and the Leaders and the congregation of Gilnahirk Presbyterian Church for their generous contributions

We are delighted with the response there has been from all quarters. It is particularly encouraging to see the enthusiatic support we have received from so many children and young people across Northern Ireland. I am sure that you will be watching our progress with interest and will be happy to know that you have helped us to make our dream of a service for life-limited children and their families into a reality.

Thank you again for your support and best wishes for a happy and peaceful New Year from all here at the Hospice.

Yours sincerely

Linda Hutchinson, Fundraiser
