SCOUTING EAST

No.219 The Journal of East Belfast Scouting MARCH 2001

Back to Scouting East Index

From The Editor

I’m sure all of us have been moved in recent days by the harrowing scenes on our TV screens of the aftermath of the devastating earthquake in western India. This got me to thinking again about that part of our Scout Promise that mentions ‘helping others’ and just how much was achieved through our response to the Kosovo Appeal, now almost two years ago. There has been much talk in Scouting circles of late about Development and by this many of us naturally think of setting up new Groups, increasing numbers, recruiting Leaders and revamping programme, all of which are undoubtedly worthy objectives and crucial for the survival and prosperity of Scouting. Perhaps we give less attention than we should to ‘Community’ Development, of what we can do as a Movement to help others, young and old, the disadvantaged, the lonely, the sick and those in need, both in East Belfast and further afield, such as in India, simply helping for helping’s sake and attempting to make a positive contribution for the better of society. I am convinced that this is one of the key factors that the wider community still associates with Scouting at its best. By projecting a genuinely caring image of community involvement and world concern, wouldn’t we indirectly reap the goals we seek in terms of good PR, new recruits and Leaders?

At the Scouters’ Meeting last month we were asked ‘Why do people volunteer?’ For some, the answer is because they wanted to give something back to an organisation that they enjoyed being part of as a boy, others because their children gain so much from Scouting, but others because they wanted to do something to help out in their Church or Community. Yes, we should strive to run an imaginative, adventurous, creative and active programme that the youngsters of East want to be part of. But perhaps we should think too of what we can do for others, including the elderly and sick without necessarily expecting them to join up and become members of our Association as a result! Let’s look inward, but let’s also look out. There are many ways too, to help overseas. Perhaps we, as a District, could make a long-term commitment to support a project such as the Aquabox appeal, Container Ministry or a Romanian Orphanage. Or, Venture Scouts and Leaders could assist with a Habitat for Humanity Project, such as the one that is being organised by the congregations of Gilnahirk to earthquake-stricken El Salvador this summer? Just a thought.

Beaver Sports, Saturday 18th November 2000

Teams from 4th, 7th, 9th, 10th and 99th Colonies (and Leaders from 27th) converged on Avoneil Leisure Centre to take part in the Annual Beaver Sports. Events included running, relay, sack-race, potato and spoon, obstacle, three-legged race and tug-of-war. The obstacle race was expertly demonstrated by one of our ADCs who showed the boys his version of how the race should be run. Some of the Leaders present thought they’d get in on the act too much to the amusement of the audience! During a slight hitch in the proceedings (Someone forgot the tug-of-war rope and was despatched to find it), the certificates were awarded to each Colony present, and to 1st, 2nd and 3rd places of each of the other events. The Design a Beaver Uniform was also judged during this time- our new DC having to deliberate between space suits complete with rocket roller blades (optional extras of course) and the retro-style cowboy look with gun belt and guns! Eventually Mr.Diamond settled on the design of sweatshirt (with elasticated waist) by a member of 9th Colony and they returned to Sydenham clutching the District Trophy and armfuls of certificates (any chance of Mr.Diamond and 9th Ameek, Pat Gordon, modelling these designs at an impromptu Fashion Show at the next Scouters’ Meeting???? Also any truth to the rumour that Elizabeth’s own entry, dubbed the ‘FireMan Sam' look was disqualified??- Ed). Each of the entries was of a very high standard, so well done to all of the boys who took part. The return of ‘Mr.Forgetful’ and the missing rope meant that that Tug-of –War league could begin and was eventually won by the team from the 4th Colony. The overall winners of Sports Day were 4th Colony who took the shield and individual medals back to Knock. The one noticeable thing was the poor attendance by the Colonies in the District. It would be nice to see this event supported better in the future with at least one team from each Colony competing. So make a date for 2001 and lets create our own East Belfast Beaver Olympics!

October 31st 2000: McMordie Scout Hall Invaded!

The new building in Oakland Avenue was overrun with all manner of ghosts, aliens, mummies, devils and demons, not to mention an angel and a Manx cat! for the annual fancy dress party. Bob the Builder and Rocky also made guest appearances and a good time was had by all. I only hope none of the party-goers was sick but judging by the food consumed, I’d say it was probable! I suppose we’ll have to follow this with some other exciting events, a visit from the Hedgehog Lady, a visit to the RUC and maybe, just maybe a visit to the Firemen!!! Watch this space.

From the District Commissioner

Can I firstly congratulate Dougie Glenn A.B.S.L 10th, Jonathan Beckett A.B.S.L 9th and Pat Gordon B.S.L 9th on receiving their Woodbadges and to all our Scouters in the District who have recently received their Warrants. It has been very refreshing to see the number and calibre of new Leaders coming into the District at our two recent Warrant interviews and I look forward to working with these new Scouters in the future. I would appeal to all G.S.L,s and Section Leaders in the District to make every effort to ensure that these new Leaders are looked after, given a proper role in the Group and nurtured to maintain their interest and help them to develop in their work with the Group.

I would draw your attention to the first meeting of our District Young Leaders’ Forum on Sunday 11th March at the 10th Group H.Q and would ask all Groups to give 100% support to Suzanne and Julie in this new venture. I have appointed Brian Laffin, C.S.L of the 4th to lead our District Development Team. Brian and his team will be looking at all Groups in the District, working with Deputy D.C Alan and his Adult Recruitment Team and reporting to me with views and thoughts for the District in the immediate future. I wish Brian and his team well in this important job.

It was great to see so many Scouters attending our last District Scouters’ Meeting on 22nd January, nearly 50 in all. My thanks to the 99th for hosting and I hope that Groups benefited from the input given by Grainne from the Volunteer Development Agency and Edwin Leighton. Alan and his team will be taking this further and would welcome any thoughts, ideas etc on recruitment of adults. If any Groups have turned ideas into action please let us know results. We will keep all Groups informed on developments in this recruiting drive.

I recently called at the 24th Troop and was amazed at the progress which this Troop has made in a short time. My sincere congratulations to Richard and Keith on turning around the fortunes of the 24th and to G.S.L Shirley Turkington on the progress that the 24th has made. Well done to all at the 24th and keep it up!

Plans are being drawn up to brief Scouters and Groups on the forthcoming changes and I would emphasise to all East Groups that we will implement these changes as a District. No need for any panic - everyone will be made aware of changes to the Sections in age groupings, uniform, programme etc. and we will address these over a period of time and implement these at District level. Don’t forget, we want to see a ‘buzz’ back in East Belfast Scouting.

Ian

PS. Recognise anyone????

On the night of the swimming badge exam at Avoneil, one of the Cubs was trying to explain which Pack he was from and described his Akela to me as follows:-

‘He’s tall with black hair, his belt sticks out and he likes to talk to girls…’

Who do we know who fits this description??

Answers on a postcard!!!!!!…..

East District Cub Scout Quiz

The District Heat of the annual Cub Scout Quiz took place at 9th HQ (Sydenham Methodist Church) on Monday 29th January. 12 teams in total participated representing 7 Packs (3rd, 9th, 10th, 27th, 30th, 33rd and 99th). Well done to Suzi and John on running an excellent competition and many thanks to Ann, Pat and all at 9th for hosting the event and keeping the marking team supplied with mugs of tea and chocolate ‘biccies’! The Editor suspects that Suzi may once have been either a teacher or an examination invigilator judging by the serious tone she injected into ‘Don’t turn your pages over until you are told to do so!’ Congratulations to the eventual winners of a closely contested quiz, 33rd Pack ‘B’ team, who will represent East at the Northern Ireland Final in March. The top 5 teams were as follows:

1st 33rd Pack B Team 56.25 points

2nd 27th Pack A Team 55.75 points

3rd 30th Pack A Team 55.00 points

4th 99th Pack A Team 49.75 points
