CONNSWATER EXPLORER UNIT (Composed of 73rd & 28th Scouts)

The first activity of the latest Explorer Unit took place over the weekend of 21st - 22nd August and was a 25k hike in the Mourne Mountains. Four Explorers, namely Ben McGreagh, Paul McIlwaine, James and Daniel Hella, and three leaders participated. Our route took us by Fofany Dam, Lough Shannagh and to the summit of Slieve Meelbeg. After rounding Slieve Bearnagh and passing through Hare's Gap, we camped at the "Shelter Stone" at the northern end of the Ben Crom reservoir. On Sunday morning we ascended to the Brandy Pad via the Kilkeel River and finished the hike in Donard Park. An enjoyable and satisfying experience and the first of many exciting activities,

75th Anniversary Celebrations at 73rd Group

75th Anniversary Camp

28 leaders, Cub Scouts and Scouts from 28th and 73rd groups descended on the Guide House, Gosford Forest Park, Markethill, on Friday 28th November to spend a weekend together as part of the 73rd’s 75th anniversary celebrations. The heavy rainfall on the Friday evening stopped in time for the night hike around the forest park, which took in the unoccupied castle - with all the usual ghost stories! More rainfall on the Saturday morning didn’t deter us from collecting wood for the evening campfire, etc. A visit to the cinema in Newry was arranged for Saturday afternoon to see ‘Elf’ – a very amusing film. Alex and Ian, who gave some interesting renderings, visited our Campfire on Saturday evening. Sunday morning’s main activity was a ramble around the site, taking in the deer park and ponds. The sun actually appeared for the first time! All in all an excellent weekend when the 73rd and 28th mixed very well together.

73rd Anniversary Dinner

This was held in the Park Avenue Hotel on Saturday 22nd November 2003. Altogether 50 present, among them present and past leaders, the youngest being 21 years old, the oldest the Rev. Reggie Chisholm who ran the cub pack in the 1940s – now 90 years young! Some flew in from England for the event and congratulations cards arrived from as far away as Australia. Truly a memorable and very enjoyable evening and it was good to see people who hadn’t met for a very long time getting re-acquainted.
