Latest news from other Scout Groups in East District

January - December 2004

After many years service as both CSL and GSL, Roy Lamont has finally retired from the 3rd Group. A Group BBQ in June saw a large turnout of 3rd members and parents to say farewell to Roy and a presentation was made on his retirement. The 3rd would like to say a big "thank you" to 10th Group Treasurer, Derek Bland, for producing a beautiful camp scene painting which was presented to Roy.

The new GSL at 3rd is the District Chaplin, Rev. Francy McCrea, and Elizabeth Dall has been appointed CSL and will be assisted by her new ACSL, Lesley Scott (Roberts) formerly of 59th Belfast. A restructuring of the 3rd Group has taken place over the summer and Roy has been appointed Group President with former 3rd Scout Master, Sam Johnston, returning to the fold as the new Group Chairman. Jenny Lamont will become Group Secretary while the Troop will be run by the D.C Ian Diamond, Roger Kane and Keith Maxwell. A new Group Parents’ Committee will be set up and under the Leadership of the new GSL and his new-look team we hope that the 3rd will go from strength to strength,

3rd Troop at TOE'99

Members of 3rd Troop attended the TOE’99 camp at Crawfordsburn in June. The action-packed programme included Dragon-Boat Racing on the River Lagan and tobogganing on the dry ski-slopes at Knockbracken which proved very popular with Scouts and Leaders alike. Many thanks to all involved in organising this event.

Belated congratulations to the members of 3rd Troop who won the overall Cup for best score at a Scout Patrol Camping competition on 21st-23rd May. All of the Scouts won individual medals as well. Roger (ASL, 3rd) would like to thank everyone involved in organising the weekend.

3rd Troop at the Ozone

3rd Troop recently visited Laser Quest at Ozone. The Scouts made up one team and another group who were also there made up the opposition The result was that the lads from the Troop won a convincing victory, but Derwin Campbell (ABSL) and myself hid our score cards - we didn't like to show off in front of the boys..NOT! A great night out was finished off with a meal at Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Leadership Changes

In these days of a shortage in leaders we count ourselves very lucky to have had three new leaders join our happy group over the past few months: Sharon Campbell (Beavers), Derwin Campbell -no relation (Beavers), Lawrence Parks (Cubs). We are quite a small group but have a good progression of boys from Squirrels right through to Scouts. Recently all sections of our Group have been involved in the 75th Birthday celebrations of our Church, St.Brendan’s (Sydenham). This year in September 2 [retired] District members, Roy Lamont, CSL 3rd, and George Jackson, Scout Fellowship, successfully completed the Mourne Mountain Marathon finishing a respectable 91st out of nearly 200 starters. Another GSL in East encouraged his Venture Scouts to compete in the event and then went to Spain on his holidays!. This event is a great challenge for young people along with the Belfast Hill Walk and the Coast to Coast Walk from Rostrevor to Newcastle.
