24th Troop brush up on their backwoodsmanship

On Wednesday 16th May the scouts of the 24th descended unto the field across from their HQ. There we spent a few hours on axe man ship instructed by myself and two other leaders Keith and Johnny. The Scouts where also taught how to operate a Trangia stove without setting light to themselves.

They prepared, and cooked their meals which consisted of Bangers and hamburgers. In the next few weeks we hope to be going to Cawfordsburn and there we hope to teach the scouts all about backwoods cooking and camping skills.

We ran an activity of pitching a vango tent in the scout hall. When they successfully pitched and struck the tent, it was made harder for them. As they had to wear scarves around their eyes. This was good fun for the scouts and it made us the leaders see who was able to work as a team.

24th Colony win the District and County Unihoc Competition

Our Beavers must spend every night playing Unihoc (!!) to have succeeded in taking both District and County trophies again. The excitement was intense at the District Competition when I arrived as the final was about to be played. Well done to Pam and Penny for all their training.

Cubs visit to Carrickfergus

wpe3.jpg (2655 bytes)The Cubs had a wonderful day at Carrickfergus on the County day out- how nice to be there as a mum and not a Cub Leader!- I noticed the comments about hundreds in the shops-if they are every Leader’s (and parent’s) nightmare how do the poor staff feel? Thanks to Steve for all his organisation- I know he had some very anxious moments about it all, but it was definitely worthwhile.

wpe4.jpg (3116 bytes)This was swiftly followed by the District Cross Country- why did we never think of Stormont before? Wasn’t it so much easier than the trek up to Cairnwood? The boys had a great run and as individuals some finished in very high places. The icing on the cake was to win the trophy for the first time- in fact, the first trophy our Cubs have won for some considerable time and how delighted they were! The Cup spent a few days in our house and following a recent burglary, Stephen decided the only place for it was in his bedroom for safekeeping and constant admiration! Thanks John, Suzanne and their team for all their organisation.

Our Troop is having a few leadership problems - anyone out there got any spare time to help out, or know of anyone who might be willing? Please let me know.
